Drive for Less: Simple Ways to Save on Fuel and Motoring This Winter

Between half-term trips, darker commutes and visits to family as Christmas gets closer, the car tends to get a lot of use at this time of year. Filling up and keeping it running can take a big chunk out of the budget, but a few simple habits can help every tank go further.

Shop around for fuel

Prices can vary from one forecourt to the next, so it pays to compare.

  • Check prices before you set off using a fuel price comparison app or website, rather than filling up wherever you happen to be.
  • Don’t drive miles out of your way for a small saving, as you could burn through the difference getting there.
  • Use loyalty schemes at the forecourts and supermarkets you already use. Points can add up over the winter.
  • Look for fuel offers linked to your regular shop, such as money-off vouchers when you spend a certain amount.

Drive smoothly

How you drive can make a real difference to how far a tank goes:

  • Accelerate gently and try to anticipate the road ahead, so you’re not braking and speeding up again.
  • Stick to the speed limit. Going faster generally means using more fuel.
  • Don’t idle unnecessarily. If you’re parked up waiting, switch the engine off where it’s safe to do so.

Give your car a quick once-over

A few simple checks can help your car run more efficiently:

  • Check your tyre pressures regularly, using the figures in your car’s handbook. It’s a good habit as the weather turns colder, too.
  • Clear out the boot. Extra weight means extra work for the engine.
  • Take off roof boxes and bike racks when you’re not using them, as they add drag.
  • Use air conditioning sensibly. It’s useful for demisting on chilly mornings, but there’s no need to leave it running all the time.

Get winter-ready for less

With the clocks going back on 25 October and frosty mornings on the way, now’s a good time to prepare:

  • Stock up on screenwash, de-icer and an ice scraper before the first frost. Buying early means you can pick them up when they’re on offer, rather than paying whatever’s available on a freezing morning.
  • Check your lights now that you’ll be driving in the dark more often.
  • Keep a winter kit in the boot: a blanket, torch, phone charger and a snack can save a costly detour if you’re delayed.
  • Keep an eye on Black Friday (27 November) for deals on car accessories you were planning to buy anyway, like dash cams, phone holders or seat covers.

Plan your journeys

  • Combine errands. One trip to do the school run, the big shop and the post office is better than three.
  • Share the load. If friends or neighbours are heading the same way, car-sharing for school runs or half-term days out can cut costs for everyone.
  • Walk or cycle short trips when the weather allows. It saves fuel and gets you some fresh air.

Look beyond the pump

Fuel is only part of the cost of running a car. While you’re reviewing your motoring budget:

  • Shop around at renewal time. Don’t automatically accept your insurance or breakdown cover renewal price without comparing.
  • Keep on top of servicing. A well-maintained car is less likely to land you with an unexpected repair bill.
  • Compare garages for servicing and repairs, and ask for a quote before any work goes ahead.

Every mile counts

You can’t control the price at the pump, but you can control how much fuel you use and where you buy it. A few small changes can add up over the winter.
